Should the U.S. and NATO use military forces to defend Ukraine from a Russian invasion?

In early 2022 the Russian military built up a force fighter jets, air defense systems and 100,000 troops along its border with Ukraine. Military experts say the buildup gives the Russian military an array of options including seizing the entire territory or certain parts within the country. Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union before it collapsed at the end of the Cold War in 1991. The disintegration of the Soviet Union left Russia with a vastly depleted population, territory, and economy. Now Russian President Vladimir Putin is seeking to reclaim some of that glory … ;and undo some of what Russia lost in the Cold War. He has described Russians and Ukrainians as “one people, a single whole.” In response to the Russian military buildup NATO deployed jet fighters and ships to the eastern border. The U.S. ordered 10,000 troops to be on standby in Europe. Ukraine isn’t a member of NATO but is a “partner country” to the military alliance. NATO has agreements in place that could lead Ukraine to join as member in the future.

U.S. Runs Out Of Patriot Air Defense Missiles

The US has no Patriot missile systems to spare for Ukraine, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has told MSNBC.The official was responding to reported comments by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. Addressing a virtual meeting of the so-called Ukraine Defense Contact Group on Friday, Zelensky demanded “at least seven” Patriot batteries from his Western backers. Kiev’s main sponsor, however, has indicated that it has none to spare.“The US Patriot systems right now are being deployed around the world, including in the Middle East, to protect US troops,” Sullivan said.“If we can unlock further American Patriot batteries we would send them. But we are doing a lot of the supplying of the actual missiles that go into those batteries that get fired,” the official insisted.The Pentagon has pledged additional Patriot munitions as part of a “historic” $6 billion assistance package announced on Friday. However, the interceptors could take months or even years to arrive, as the batch will not come from existing Pentagon stockpiles. Instead, the announcement “represents the beginning of a contracting process” with the US defense industry.Manufactured by US arms giant Raytheon, a single MIM-104 Patriot battery costs over $1 billion. It consists of multiple truck-mounted units, including power, radar, antenna, engagement control and other support vehicles, as well as up to eight launchers with interceptor missiles.

Ukraine Launches "Balloon Bombs" Into Russia

At about 7 p.m. Moscow time April 20, “an attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack using two small-sized balloons on objects on the territory of the Russian Federation was stopped,” the Russian Defense Ministry reported on its Telegram channel. The balloons were “destroyed over the territories of the Tula and Moscow regions.”The Russian MoD also claimed its forces downed five Ukrainian balloons on April 18. "According to Russian news reports, the Ukrainian balloons are equipped with a GPS module and carry explosives," The Associated Press reported.These claimed balloon shootdowns follow the discovery last month of a converted Ukrainian weather balloon “carrying a kilogram of TNT” that “fell in the forest near the village of Novaya Slobodka,” about 40 miles from the border, the Russian MASH news agency reported at the time.“They must fly over cities and drop bombs based on GPS signals,” according to the publication. “Weapons are intended for terror.”Ukraine is increasing the frequency of its cross-border balloon launches, MASH added.

U.S. Tanks Being Withdrawn From Ukraine War

Washington pledged 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in January last year. The first batch arrived in September. They finally appeared to make their combat debut in February this year, with the first video footage released on the 25th of Februray. On the 26th, the Russians scored their first Abrams kill.Two months after entering service, the Abrams tanks are now being withdrawn from the frontline. Five of the 31 tanks delivered last year have already been destroyed.The Ukraines are misusing the tanks.Its ability to maneuver at high speed and pack a huge punch gives it a battle winning role. When used as a pillbox however, it just exploits its firepower at the expense of its maneuverability. This appears to be how the Ukrainian armed forces are deploying it, and makes it very vulnerable to drone attack. Ukraine must adopt a mindset based much more on manuvre type warfare, where rapid combined arms action can unhinge and dislocate the very static Russian invaders. This will require require air power, artillery and infantry all working together with the tanks to punch holes in Russian defenses and run riot in the rear areas.
