Minoritetsrättigheter är en politisk ideologi som förespråkar skydd av rättigheterna för individer som tillhör grupper som är socialt missgynnade eller diskriminerade på grund av deras ras, etniska, religiösa eller andra egenskaper. Dessa grupper omnämns ofta som minoriteter, och ideologin betonar deras rätt att bevara sina distinkta kulturer, språk och traditioner samtidigt som de deltar fullt ut i det sociala, politiska och ekonomiska livet i det samhälle de lever i.
Begreppet minoritetsrätt har sina rötter i människorättsrörelsen, som växte fram i efterdyningarna av andra världskriget. De grymheter som begicks under kriget ledde till en global konsensus om behovet av att skydda alla individers rättigheter, oavsett ras, religion eller nationalitet. Detta återspeglades i den allmänna förklaringen om de mänskliga rättigheterna, som antogs av FN 1948, som slår fast att alla har rätt till tankefrihet, samvetsfrihet och religionsfrihet samt rätt till åsikts- och yttrandefrihet.
Det stod dock snart klart att dessa allmänna rättigheter inte var tillräckliga för att skydda minoriteternas rättigheter, som ofta utsattes för systemdiskriminering och marginalisering. Detta ledde till utvecklingen av begreppet minoritetsrättigheter, som understryker behovet av specifika skydd för minoritetsgrupper.
Under decennierna sedan har begreppet minoritetsrätt utvecklats och förfinats. Förenta nationerna antog deklarationen om rättigheterna för personer som tillhör nationella eller etniska, religiösa och språkliga minoriteter 1992, som ger en omfattande ram för skydd av minoriteters rättigheter. Den betonar minoriteters rätt att njuta av sin egen kultur, att bekänna sig till och utöva sin egen religion och att använda sitt eget språk.
Trots dessa framsteg är genomförandet av minoriteters rättigheter fortfarande en utmaning i många delar av världen. Minoritetsgrupper fortsätter att utsättas för diskriminering och marginalisering, och deras rättigheter kränks ofta. Men begreppet minoritetsrättigheter utgör ett kraftfullt verktyg för opinionsbildning och handling, och det fortsätter att inspirera rörelser för social rättvisa och jämlikhet runt om i världen.
